What Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum tickets cover on these tours
All three tours include Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum tickets, so admission is handled by the operator and you go in with the guide rather than sorting the entry out at the door. The shortest runs 2 hours, from 3,000 yen; the other two run 3 hours, from 13,325 yen and from 17,500 yen. Each one also walks the park: the Cenotaph, the Flame of Peace, the Children's Peace Monument, the Rest House, the hypocentre marker and the Atomic Bomb Dome.
The museum keeps long days, which gives you room to fit a 2 or 3 hour tour around a train. It opens at 7:30am and closes at 7:00pm from March through July and again from September through November. In August it stays open until 8:00pm, and until 9:00pm on 5 and 6 August. Closing moves an hour earlier, to 6:00pm, between December and February. Entry to the permanent exhibition during the early-morning and late-evening extension windows requires an online reservation.
Two closures matter when you pick a date. The museum is shut on 30 and 31 December, and for a few days in mid-February while the exhibition is changed over. Go in the morning if you have the choice: the galleries are at their quietest before the coach groups reach the park, and a 10:00 start still leaves the afternoon for Miyajima or the castle grounds.
Peace Memorial Park is a designed landscape of approximately 122,100 square metres, completed on 1 April 1954 to a plan by three architects including Kenzo Tange, whose entry was chosen first out of 145 submissions. The Atomic Bomb Dome was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 5 December 1996, at the committee meeting in Merida, Mexico. A guide gives you that sequence in the order the park was built, and the commentary on these tours is in English, with Japanese also available on the private tour.
Which one fits you
With a couple of hours between trains, take the 2-hour tour from 3,000 yen. It meets near the telephone booth at the taxi stand in Peace Memorial Park, covers the park monuments and the museum, and ends where it began. It currently shows 5.0 ★ (5 reviews), which is a small sample rather than a verdict.
Arriving by ship, take the 3-hour tour from 13,325 yen, rated 4.9 ★ (37 reviews). The guide meets you by taxi at Hiroshima Port or Itsukaichi Port, takes you directly to the Atomic Bomb Dome and the museum, then drives you back to the port. If you are already in the city, the alternative meeting point is in front of the Seven-Eleven at Hiroshima Otemachi 1-chome, where the guide holds a yellow sign.
Travelling as a family or a small group, or wanting more than the park, take the private tour from 17,500 yen, rated 5.0 ★ (73 reviews). You meet the guide at a central Hiroshima hotel, at Hiroshima Station or at the cruise terminal, and the itinerary is set in advance: 3 hours for the peace sites with either Hiroshima Castle or Shukkeien added, 4 hours for a wider loop of the city. Cruise passengers should choose the 4-hour option. Private transportation and meals are not included.
For Spanish-language commentary or a Miyajima crossing in the same day, none of these three is the right fit; compare the tours on the full-day pages instead.
Before you book
- The 2-hour tour meets near the telephone booth at the taxi stand in Peace Memorial Park; the guide is in person and speaks English, and museum tickets are part of the tour.
- The 3-hour port tour has two meeting arrangements: a taxi pickup at Hiroshima Port or Itsukaichi Port with a drive back afterwards, or the Seven-Eleven at Hiroshima Otemachi 1-chome, where the guide holds a yellow sign. Lunch and coffee or tea are not included.
- The private tour meets at a central Hiroshima hotel, at Hiroshima Station or at the cruise terminal, runs in English or Japanese, and includes Shukkeien admission and skip-the-line museum entry. Private transportation, meals and tips are not included, and a pickup at Itsukaichi Port carries an additional charge payable in cash on the day.
- Set the itinerary of the private tour in advance: 3 hours for the park and museum plus Hiroshima Castle or Shukkeien, 4 hours for more of the city, including how Hiroshima rebuilt and the medical response that followed.
- Reaching the park from JR Hiroshima Station takes about 25 minutes by Hiroden tram to Genbaku Dome-mae plus roughly a 10-minute walk, or about 20 minutes by streetcar line 1 or bus 24 to Hon-dori plus a five-minute walk. No tickets are sold on board the trams and you pay as you get off.
- The Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall, included in the 2-hour walk, opens at 8:30am and closes at 6:00pm from March to November, 7:00pm in August and 5:00pm from December to February. It has no public parking except for visitors with physical disabilities, and the institution itself recommends public transport.
- Dress for a lot of walking outdoors between buildings. August highs in Hiroshima average 32.8C, July is the wettest month at 279.8 mm, and January highs average 9.9C, so shade and water matter in summer and a coat does in winter.
