What this Hiroshima day tour covers

This Hiroshima day tour runs 8 hours and covers two World Heritage sites: Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima and Peace Memorial Park in the city. Movement is by chartered bus and by the Miyajima-guchi ferry, a crossing of about 10 minutes, and the guide works in both English and Spanish. Round-trip bus, round-trip ferry and entrance to Itsukushima Shrine are included; food and drinks and hotel pickup are not.

The park segment is a guided walk outdoors, among the monuments and around the exterior of the Atomic Bomb Dome, so museum admission is not part of the day. If you want to go inside Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum as well, the Peaceful Hiroshima & Miyajima UNESCO 1 Day Bus Tour, 8 hours from 19,488 yen, includes that admission along with Miyajima Island and Itsukushima Shrine.

Two options exist at booking. The full day meets outside Hiroshima Station at the Shinkansenguchi Hiroba bus berth; a Miyajima-only version meets at Hiroden-Miyajimaguchi Station and ends after the island, which is worth choosing only if you have already walked the park. Arrive 15 minutes before the meeting time either way.

Whether the shrine appears to float, and whether the Great Torii can be approached on foot, depends on the tide rather than the time of day, and the Miyajima Tourist Association publishes a daily tide table; check it before you travel and treat either sight as a bonus. The island stop is planned around the shrine and the town, so the Mt. Misen ropeway, which carries passengers uphill from 9:00 to 16:00 with the last descent at 16:30, is not part of this tour.

How the day runs

  1. Meeting at Hiroshima Station 50 min
The full-day option starts at Hiroshima Station, where you meet the guide and the rest of the group and board an air-conditioned coach. The guide sets out the basics of the city's history on the way toward the coast. If you have chosen the Miyajima-only option, you join at Hiroden-Miyajimaguchi Station instead.
  2. Bus leg to the coast 5 min
A short run to the ferry terminal at Miyajima-guchi, with the guide talking about Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine. This is the point where the Miyajima-only group joins the day.
  3. Itsukushima Shrine and Miyajima 180 min
The ferry crosses to Miyajima in about 10 minutes. On the island you visit Itsukushima Shrine, built over the water in shinden-zukuri style by Taira no Kiyomori in 1168, a designated national treasure registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996, and walk its wooden corridors above the Seto Inland Sea. Time on your own follows for the shopping streets, grilled oysters or momiji manju. The ferry then returns to the mainland, which is where the Miyajima-only option ends.
  4. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park 180 min
The bus continues to Peace Memorial Park for a guided walk through the outdoor areas: the monuments and the exterior of the Atomic Bomb Dome, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 5 December 1996. The park is a designed landscape of approximately 122,100 square metres, completed on 1 April 1954 to a plan by three architects including Kenzo Tange.
  5. Back at Hiroshima Station 40 min
The day ends at Hiroshima Station, which puts you beside the Shinkansen gates and the tram stops if you are moving on the same evening.
