How to choose the tour

If you sleep in Hiroshima

Staying in the city gives you the widest choice and the shortest days. The 8-hour bus day from Hiroshima Station is the fullest single itinerary, pairing Hiroshima Castle, the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park and its museum with the ferry to Itsukushima Shrine and Daishoin Temple. The 8 hour 20 minute coach round trip reverses the order and takes Miyajima first, which suits anyone who prefers the island before the crowds, while the 8-hour day with round-trip bus, ferry and shrine entrance included keeps the paperwork to a minimum.

Half a day is enough for the city centre itself. The 5-hour walking tour covers Peace Memorial Park, the cenotaph, the Children's Peace Monument, the Atomic Bomb Dome and Orizuru Tower with lunch at the tower; the 3 to 4 hour morning bike ride adds Hiroshima Castle and the Shukkeien garden across flat ground; and the 3-hour izakaya night walk fills an evening once the sightseeing is done, for travellers aged 20 and over. With a train to catch the same afternoon, one of the short guided museum walks runs in 2 or 3 hours.

If you sleep in Osaka or Kyoto

Long-distance days let you keep your hotel and still reach both Hiroshima and Miyajima. From Osaka, the bullet train day of 13 hours 10 minutes includes reserved seats in Ordinary Class or the Green Car and 60 minutes inside the Peace Memorial Museum, while the 11.5-hour day with a bilingual guide is the shorter Osaka option. From Kyoto, the 13 hour 20 minute day is timed from the moment staff collect you near Kyoto Station. The 8 to 12 hour bus tour lets you pick Osaka, Kyoto or Hiroshima as the start point, so one booking covers several bases.

Language of the guide

English runs through every option on this page. Spanish speakers have two choices, the 8-hour bus day with ferry and shrine entrance and the 11.5-hour day from Osaka, both led by a bilingual English and Spanish guide. National government licensed English guide-interpreters work the Miyajima coach day, the Osaka bullet train day and the Hiroshima segment of the Kyoto day, whose two Shinkansen legs are unguided. Japanese is available on the private walk among the museum tours, and the flexible-start bus tour is conducted in English only.

Budget and group size

The lowest starting price sits with the guided museum walks, from JPY 3000, and the morning bike ride starts at JPY 11000. Among the full-day itineraries, the bilingual bus day starts from JPY 7127 and the flexible-start day from JPY 17000, while the Shinkansen days from Osaka and Kyoto cost from JPY 59900 and JPY 60500 because the reserved train seats are built in. Couples and families who want the route to themselves should look at the private 8-hour walking day from JPY 30900 per booking, where separate groups are never combined and transport, ferry, entrance fees and lunch are arranged outside the price.
