What the Hiroshima tour from Kyoto includes

This Hiroshima tour from Kyoto is a 13 hour 20 minute day built around two Shinkansen legs of about 100 minutes each. Staff meet you at the tour desk inside Avanti B1F, across from Kyoto Station's Hachijo Exit, and walk you to the Shinkansen platform; the local guide interpreter picks the group up on the platform at Hiroshima Station and leads you to the bus. The tour starts from 60,500 yen and is rated 4.5 ★ (147 reviews).

Stop times are set in advance: 60 minutes at Itsukushima Shrine, 60 minutes on Miyajima for lunch, 20 minutes at Peace Memorial Park, 20 minutes at the Atomic Bomb Dome and 60 minutes inside the Peace Memorial Museum. That is about 220 minutes on the ground, which matches the pace of a one-day Hiroshima and Miyajima itinerary and explains why the bus keeps moving between sites.

Bullet train tickets, the Miyajima visitor tax, the licensed English guide interpreter for the Hiroshima segment and the other admissions and transport are covered. Lunch is not, so eat on the island rather than holding out for the city: the shops on the Miyajima shopping street do oysters, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and conger eel over rice, and the deer that wander the street will take an interest in anything you carry openly.

When you book, you choose between an Ordinary Class seat and a Green Car seat on the Shinkansen. The bus in Hiroshima is air-conditioned and heated, which matters in August, when average daily highs reach 32.8C, and in January, when highs average 9.9C.

The day step by step

  1. Kyoto Station to Hiroshima by Shinkansen 100 min
Staff meet you at the tour desk inside Avanti B1F and walk you to the platform at Kyoto Station. The ride west is unguided, with a reserved seat in the Ordinary Class car or the Green Car according to the plan you chose. Your local guide is waiting on the platform at Hiroshima Station and takes the group to the bus boarding point.
  2. Itsukushima Shrine 60 min
The shrine dates its founding to 593 and was rebuilt in shinden-zukuri style, the layout of a Heian-period noble's residence, by Taira no Kiyomori in 1168. It is a designated national treasure and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996, with Mount Misen rising behind the lacquered pavilions and the Seto Inland Sea in front. The tide decides whether the shrine looks as though it floats, and the Miyajima Tourist Association publishes a daily tide table.
  3. Miyajima 60 min
An hour on the island for lunch, which is not included in the tour. Oysters, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, layered rather than mixed, and anago-meshi, grilled conger eel over rice, are all sold along the shopping street, so pick your own place. The Miyajima visitor tax is covered by the tour.
  4. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park 20 min
The park was established in 1949 and completed on 1 April 1954 to a design by three architects including Kenzo Tange, chosen first out of 145 competition entries. It covers approximately 122,100 square metres, so the guide walks a line through it rather than circling the whole landscape.
  5. Atomic Bomb Dome 20 min
The Dome has been kept as it stood and is the memorial anchor at the north end of the park. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 5 December 1996, at the committee meeting in Merida, Mexico.
  6. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum 60 min
An hour inside the museum with the licensed guide interpreter, who puts the exhibition in order of the city's history and its post-war rebuilding. The building itself is an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Admission is part of the tour, so there is no queuing to sort out on arrival.
  7. Hiroshima Station back to Kyoto 100 min
The return Shinkansen leaves from Hiroshima Station with a reserved seat in the same class you selected. This segment is unguided, and the tour ends when the train reaches Kyoto Station.
